How is CELPIP Speaking scored?

CELPIP Speaking is rated on four dimensions — Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability and Task Fulfillment — and the whole component is then reported as a single CELPIP level from 0 to 12, one level per skill, which lines up with CLB from 4 upwards. The eight speaking tasks take 15 minutes in total. The four dimensions are the columns the official Speaking Level Descriptors are written in; sub-scores per dimension are not published, and no third party — CLB Pilot included — can issue or predict a CELPIP level.

What a Speaking answer is judged on

The official Speaking Level Descriptors are laid out in four columns, and every level is written as a set of "At this level, I can…" statements under each one. The column names below are the test owner's. The one-line note under each is our plain-language reading of that name — the authoritative wording is in the official PDF, not here.

Content/Coherence

Whether the answer stays with the task, develops a line of thought, and connects one point to the next.

Vocabulary

Whether the right word is available for the situation, and how wide and how precise that word range is.

Listenability

How easy the answer is to follow by ear: rhythm, pronunciation, intonation, and overall intelligibility.

Task Fulfillment

Whether the answer does what that particular task asks, for that audience and that situation.

CELPIP level, CLB level, and what the level means

Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking are each reported as a CELPIP level from 0 to 12. From 4 upwards the CELPIP level and the CLB level are the same number. The third column is the headline sentence of the official level descriptor, shortened.

CELPIP Test Level Descriptor, levels 12–3. Quoted from celpip.ca/test-format-scoring.
CELPIP level CLB level Level descriptor
CELPIP 12CLB 12Expert proficiency in high-stakes social, educational or workplace contexts
CELPIP 11CLB 11Advanced proficiency in high-stakes social, educational or workplace contexts
CELPIP 10CLB 10Highly effective proficiency in some high-stakes social, educational or workplace contexts
CELPIP 9CLB 9Effective proficiency in some high-stakes social, educational or workplace contexts
CELPIP 8CLB 8Good proficiency in more demanding social, educational or workplace contexts
CELPIP 7CLB 7Adequate proficiency in somewhat demanding social, educational or workplace contexts
CELPIP 6CLB 6Developing proficiency in everyday social, educational or workplace contexts
CELPIP 5CLB 5Acquiring proficiency in everyday social, educational or workplace contexts
CELPIP 4CLB 4Adequate proficiency for daily life activities
CELPIP 3CLB 3Some proficiency in limited contexts of personal relevance

Below CLB 4 the mapping stops being one to one: CELPIP 2 spans CLB 1–2, and CELPIP 0 and 1 map to no CLB level — the official table describes both as "insufficient information to assess". Those rows are left out of the table rather than flattened into a number they do not have.

Eight tasks in 15 minutes, one level out

Speaking is the shortest of the four components: 15 minutes for eight tasks. Every answer is judged against the same four dimensions, and the component is then reported as a single CELPIP level rather than four separate scores.

The eight tasks, in the order the test presents them: giving advice, talking about a personal experience, describing a scene, making predictions, comparing and persuading, dealing with a difficult situation, expressing opinions, and describing an unusual situation. For comparison, Listening runs 46–55 minutes, Reading 43–56 minutes and Writing 53 minutes.

Two things follow from that structure. First, the four dimensions are not four numbers on your score report — they are the structure the descriptors are written in, which is why a rater can work through them and still hand back one level. Second, because the output is a single level on a 13-point scale, practice feedback that reports a "score" without a range is claiming precision the scale does not have.

That is the line CLB Pilot draws: it returns a band plus a numeric range, calibrated on 50 official sample responses (64% of estimates within one band, 94% within two), and it never turns that into a CELPIP level. A practice band tells you where an answer sits today; only the test tells you what you scored.

What this page is not

This page explains how CELPIP Speaking is scored. It does not score anybody, and it is not an official source.

  • Not an official conversion. The CELPIP-to-CLB mapping is quoted from the test owner's own table; anything outside that table is out of scope here.
  • Not the descriptors. The "At this level, I can…" sentences belong to CELPIP; read them in the official PDF rather than in a paraphrase.
  • Not a score. CLB Pilot does not issue, predict or estimate a CELPIP level, and its three bands are not CELPIP levels.
  • Not the immigration rule. Which components a program counts, and at what level, is set out on IRCC pages.

Which CLB level a program asks for: the official CELPIP-to-CLB chart, explained. If you already know what the four dimensions are and want to raise them, the diagnose-then-drill method is the practice side of this page.

CELPIP Speaking scoring, asked directly

What are the four CELPIP Speaking rating dimensions?

Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability and Task Fulfillment. They are the four columns of the official CELPIP Speaking Level Descriptors, and each level is written as "At this level, I can…" statements under every dimension.

Is CELPIP Speaking scored out of 12?

Every component is reported as a CELPIP level from 0 to 12, and Speaking is one of the four components. The level is a band on that scale, not a percentage of correct answers — a speaking task has no answer key.

How long is the CELPIP Speaking test?

15 minutes for eight tasks, according to the CELPIP Test Format & Scoring page. The other components take longer: Listening 46–55 minutes, Reading 43–56 minutes, Writing 53 minutes.

Does CELPIP 9 in Speaking mean CLB 9?

On the official table, CELPIP level 9 corresponds to CLB 9, and levels 4 to 12 line up one to one. What a program requires is a separate question: each component is counted separately, so a CLB 9 in Speaking says nothing about Reading or Writing.

Can CLB Pilot tell me my CELPIP Speaking level?

No. CLB Pilot gives feedback on practice answers in four dimensions plus one band and a range, calibrated on 50 official sample responses. It does not issue, predict or convert to a CELPIP level; only the test does that.
